It's going to be hard to find anything to surpass this device, for 'daily help and assistance' in getting around - I gave it a fair trial yesterday; it was quite brilliant! The design was also exquisite in a number of ways.
Very simple to install and use, superbly portable etc... It has two operational modes, one that 'powers up' when specifically 'pushed' and the other which gives continuous 'drive' once activated. It can 'motor along' at about 4.5 mph and has a 'full battery' range of approximately 10 miles, depending on the level of use and terrain...
One of the overriding features is portability; the SmartDrive unit, that can be seen in the photo is fairly heavy for it's size (as it contains a very high torque motor), but compared to other powered chairs etc... it becomes a no-brainer.
What I need is 'assistance' with propulsion from time-to-time, not something to 'replace' manual propulsion, which is necessary to maintain fitness!
It does not compete with the 'Mountain Trike' for getting up hills, or uneven ground, such as gravel and rocky terrain - but from a cost point of view, I've only got one-bit-of-the-cherry for the time being! The main draw-back to the MT, was the fact that it took up so much space in the car, and was rather heavy for Kim to lift... We concluded that the MT would be rather impractical for going on holiday. It's a shame, because I rather liked it - and certainly gave me lots of exercise, as it was fully manually propelled.
Just need to discuss this a bit further, before turning these thoughts into a purchase!!
